Ever wonder how a small village becomes part of a big city? That’s the story of Berlin-Karow. Let’s explore this unique Ortsteil in Berlin. Berlin-Karow is more than just a place. It is a piece of history.

Karow’s story begins long ago. The settlement was first documented in 1375. Back then, it was known as Kare. In 1920, Karow officially became part of Berlin. This happened with the Greater Berlin Act. Before that, it was an autonomous Prussian municipality. It belonged to the Niederbarnim district.

Despite its growth, Berlin-Karow has kept its village feel. Even with new buildings, the old charm remains. A large housing project was built from 1992 to 1996. This increased the population.

Let’s talk about what makes Berlin-Karow special. The Karower Dorfkirche is a must-see. It was built around 1250. This makes it the oldest building on the Barnim in Berlin. The Altes Schulhaus is another historic site. It opened in 1516. However, it has been closed since 1934. The Altes Feuerwehr-Spritzenhaus shows local history. It was built in 1904. It was carefully restored between 2004 and 2006. Along Alt-Karow street, you’ll find old farmhouses. These date back to the 1800s. The S-Bahn station is a late 19th-century design.

Nature lovers will appreciate the Karower Teiche. These ponds form a large nature reserve. To the east, you’ll find parts of the Barnim Landscape Park. Most of this area is used for farming.

Karow has changed over time. In 1985, it became part of the Weißensee district. In 2001, it returned to Pankow. New housing areas were built from 1994 to 1997. Locals often call this area Neu-Karow. This shows a difference from the older part of town. These new areas include about 5,092 apartments. Around 13,000 people live in Neu-Karow.

Berlin-Karow also has good transportation links. The Karow S-Bahn station connects it to Berlin. The Heidekrautbahn local railway also starts here.

Berlin-Karow offers a unique mix. It blends history with modern life. The Karower Dorfkirche stands as a testament to its long past. The restored Feuerwehr-Spritzenhaus reminds us of community efforts. The natural beauty of the Karower Teiche provides a peaceful escape. So, as you leave Berlin-Karow, remember its journey. From a small village to a vibrant part of Berlin, it continues to evolve while holding onto its roots.
