Whispers of community pride echo through the streets of Berkley. This northern suburb of Detroit thrives on a blend of small-town charm and big-city access. Berkley’s story is one of transformation from dense forests to a sought-after residential haven.

In the early days, adventurers discovered fertile farming land. They pushed through swamps and established a community. By the 1840s, dairy farms dotted the landscape that would become Berkley. The 1910s ushered in an era of significant growth. The Highland Park Ford Plant brought more people to the area. Farms gave way to subdivisions. The push to formally incorporate the land grew stronger. In 1923, Berkley was officially incorporated as a village. Elmer Cromie’s road and the Berkley School under construction influenced the village’s name.

The Wall Street Crash of 1929 brought hard times to Berkley. Roughly 90% of residents lost their jobs. The village’s population began to shrink. To gain better control over taxes and community issues, Berkley became a city in 1932.

After World War II, suburbanization fueled development. The current Berkley High School was built in 1949. Berkley reached its peak population in 1960 with 23,375 residents. The Berkley Theater, a local movie-going landmark, closed in 1993.

Downtown Berkley is a vibrant stretch along 12 Mile Road. It extends from Greenfield Road to Coolidge Highway. It also runs along Coolidge Highway between 12 Mile and 11 Mile Roads. Here, you will find restaurants, boutiques and unique retail shops. Berkley’s municipal offices, public library, and public safety headquarters are nearby.

Berkley hosts the annual Art Bash. This event draws thousands to the city’s commercial sector. Artists showcase everything from photographs to jewelry. Local stores add to the fun with sidewalk sales. Berkley is also an active participant in the Woodward Dream Cruise. The Berkley CruiseFest is a classic car parade held the day before the official Dream Cruise. This tradition has continued since 1995.

The city organizes Summerfest and Winterfest. These events are run by the Parks and Recreation Department, volunteers, and community organizations. Berkley boasts neighborhood parks. A central community center sits on Catalpa Drive, east of Anderson Middle School. The Berkley Ice Arena was a fixture for decades, but it closed in 2016 due to a coolant leak. It was demolished in 2019.

Berkley’s grid-pattern streets and smaller lots foster a tight-knit community. This makes it a popular suburb. The city is known for its healthy housing market and walkable downtown.
