Established in 1682 Berkeley County boasts a rich history. It was named for Sir William Berkeley and John Berkeley Lords Proprietors of Carolina. Imagine the bustling activity of the early settlers. They carved a life from the Lowcountry landscape. Berkeley County became part of the Charleston District in 1769. It wasn’t always a separate entity. For much of the 19th century it was integrated into the Low Country culture. The current incarnation of Berkeley County emerged in 1882. This was after the Democrats regained control of the state legislature. Their initial county seat was Mount Pleasant. It later moved to Moncks Corner in 1895.

Berkeley County’s history is interwoven with the American Revolution. Francis Marion a celebrated Revolutionary War general found refuge in the county’s swamps. These swamps provided ideal cover from the British. The county’s strategic location along rivers and lakes impacted its history. The Santee and Wando Rivers shape its eastern and southeastern boundaries. The Cooper River also flows through it. Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie formed by dams add to the scenic beauty. Old Santee Canal State Park stands as a testament to the area’s historical importance.

The county’s geography is equally captivating. A significant portion of Berkeley County’s eastern half is part of the Francis Marion National Forest. This includes the infamous Hell Hole Swamp. The area is a blend of pine and cypress-hardwood forests. The timber industry played a major role in the county’s economy. It continues to shape its character. Agriculture remains vital. Tobacco and corn are leading crops. Recreation on the man-made lakes is another major contributor to the economy. Goose Creek and Hanahan are the largest cities in Berkeley County. Moncks Corner serves as the county seat.

Today Berkeley County continues to evolve. While its history is deeply rooted in agriculture and timber the county’s economy has diversified. Major employers include Blackbaud Booz Allen Hamilton Nucor Publix Volvo Cars and Walmart. The county’s population has grown significantly. In 2020 its population was 229861. This reflects a long-term upward trend. Berkeley County’s story is one of resilience adaptation and growth. It is a place where history and modernity coexist. The rich past influences the vibrant present. It creates a distinctive identity for this South Carolina County.
