Dreaming of living in a mansion? The Bergdoll-Kemble Mansion stands before us. It is not just bricks and mortar. It is a portal to Philadelphia’s past.

Built in 1886 this historic house is located in the Spring Garden neighborhood. James H. Windrim designed it. The Bergdoll-Kemble Mansion showcases Beaux Arts and Italianate styles.

Originally, it was built for the Louis Bergdoll family. They owned the City Park Brewery. Later, it became known for Grover Cleveland Bergdoll. He was a playboy aviator. He famously dodged the World War I draft. Imagine that! Grover was apprehended right here in the mansion in 1920. Authorities were searching for him because of his draft dodging. This added to the mansion’s mystique.

Inside, the Bergdoll-Kemble Mansion is massive. It spans 14000 square feet. There are eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms. Two kitchens provide ample space. Mahogany woodwork adds warmth and elegance. You can also find multiple fireplaces, frescoes and mosaics. These details reflect its rich history.

The Bergdoll-Kemble Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976. This designation protects it from demolition. This ensures its preservation for future generations.

In 1989 a fire damaged the house. But it was lovingly restored. Siraik Zakarian, a biochemist, bought the mansion to save it from developers. Over decades she spent millions on restorations. She updated and renovated the property. She carved apartments from the large rooms. Zakarian wanted to keep the mansion’s historical integrity. She ensured everything was done correctly no matter the cost.

Living here means being close to Philadelphia’s attractions. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is nearby. You could take a Saturday morning outing or a late-night stroll on the iconic Rocky Steps.

The Bergdoll-Kemble Mansion offers a unique experience. Its exterior remains largely original. Much of the interior is also original. Imagine owning a piece of Philadelphia’s history. This home offers a glimpse into another time. Every corner tells a story. It could be an incredible museum. It could also serve as an office or a social club.

The Bergdoll-Kemble Mansion is more than just a building. It represents a legacy. It shows architectural beauty. It also embodies stories of a colorful past. Take a moment to appreciate this treasure.
