Dive into the past at the Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum. This isn’t just a museum. It is a time capsule. It is a window into the lives of Ruhrgebiet miners and their families.

The Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum is located in Luenen-Brambauer. It offers an intimate glimpse into the daily lives of mining families. These families lived here in the early 20th century. Specifically, it highlights the 1920s and 1930s.

Founded in 1994, the Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum emerged from a renovation project. The project focused on the Neue Zechenkolonie. This colony belonged to the former Zeche Minister Achenbach mine. Half of a miner’s house built between 1904 and 1905 was transformed. It recreates the living conditions of a miner’s family around 1930.

The Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum showcases a painstakingly recreated home. It includes details like exposed wiring. Whitewashed walls feature hand-painted borders. Red plank floors lead to a basic outhouse. These elements reflect the no-frills existence of the time.

Dr. Andreas Abels offers tours. He explains that families were self-sufficient. They raised pigs, chickens, and pigeons. They cultivated gardens for fruits and vegetables.

The Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum features a kitchen, living room, and bedroom. One apartment includes a children’s room. The rooms showcase donated items like kitchenware, tools, and furniture. Photos and decorations enhance the scene.

Interestingly, the Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum is also a wedding venue. Couples exchange vows in the “Gute Stube.” Furthermore, it has served as a backdrop for film and TV productions.

Originally, the first exhibits came from a local antique dealer. Later, residents and visitors contributed more items. The Förderverein Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum e. V. manages the museum. VIVAWEST supports it.

Brambauer’s population exploded when the Zeche Minister Achenbach mine opened in 1900. The village transformed from farms into a small town. The “Neue Kolonie Minister Achenbach” housed the growing workforce. Architect D & K Schulze designed 22 house styles for the colony. This created a varied street scene.

The Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum opens on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Admission is 1.50 euros or 2.00 euros with a tour. Children get a reduced entry fee.

So, step inside the Bergarbeiter-Wohnmuseum. Experience the past. Imagine life as a miner in the Ruhrgebiet. Appreciate the hard work and simple lives of these families.
