A celery packing operation an ice-making plant and finally American Appliance water heaters all called it home. These warehouses now house art not appliances. By the late 1980s the rail line was abandoned. The city of Santa Monica bought the land in 1987. They envisioned a light rail system. This plan was years off. A brilliant idea emerged. The 26th Street/Bergamot station opened in 2016. It stands as a testament to the area’s transformation.
