Do you see this mighty structure before us? This is the Castello di Bereguardo, a testament to the power and influence of the Visconti lords. It wasn’t always as it stands today. It all began in the early 14th century, when the Visconti family decided to build a castle here to control this strategically important passage over the Ticino river. The castle became more than just a fortification though. It was a place of recreation and hunting for the Dukes of Milan. The name Bereguardo, meaning “beautiful view”, was apt, given its commanding position overlooking the valley of the river.
Construction of the castle started under Luchino Visconti, but it was his nephew Bernabò Visconti who truly expanded it, strengthening Milan’s grip on the region. The castello’s unique shape, a kind of “U”, is the result of missing a north wing. Though remodeled several times over the centuries, the facade still boasts its original 15th-century style. You can still spot remnants of the ancient moat that once surrounded it.
Once serving as a pleasure palace for the Visconti, this castle witnessed many historical events, from the intrigue of the Milanese court to the struggles of the Sforza family. In the 18th century, it was part of the Feudo degli Eleiizander. Today, it’s no longer a home to the elite, but rather a hub of municipal offices.
