The story of Berean Seventh-Day Adventist Church starts in 1903. A small group of believers gathered. They met in each other’s homes. Sister Anna Knight led them. This humble beginning laid the foundation. It set the stage for a century of growth.
In 1906, a mission school for Black students was founded. G.E. Peters organized it. This school became Berean Christian Junior Academy. It is now the oldest African-American private school in Atlanta. The church played a vital role in education from the start.
The church first bought a building on Greensferry Avenue. It was named Second Seventh-day Adventist Church. Later, the name changed to Berean Seventh-Day Adventist Church. This happened under Pastor A.B. Storey.
Many pastors have served Berean over the years. Each one has contributed to its growth. W.H. Sebastian was the first pastor. Others include H.L. Cleveland, Dunbar Henri, and Walter Pearson. Sherwin Jack is the current senior pastor. He leads with associate pastors.
Berean has moved several times. It started on Greensferry Avenue. Then it moved to Ashby Street, Hightower Road, and finally Hamilton E. Holmes Drive. Each location marks a new chapter in the church’s journey.
The church celebrated its 120th anniversary. The theme was “Celebrating God’s Faithfulness.” Past leaders, former members, and visitors gathered. Over 2,500 people attended in person. Thousands more watched online. Carlton P. Byrd, a former pastor, was the speaker.
Anna Knight played a crucial role in Berean’s early days. She helped develop a sanitarium for Black people in Atlanta. Knight also started a local YWCA for Black women. Her work led to many new members joining the church.
Berean has always been a place of growth. It has supported education and community. The church’s commitment remains strong. It continues to serve its members and the wider Atlanta community.
