The Berberberg Eingang welcomes you to a world of Berber monkeys. Opened in 1998, this one-hectare enclosure mimics the western Mediterranean habitat of these endangered primates. The Berberberg offers a unique viewing experience. You can observe these fascinating creatures without obstructive fences. With a little patience, you might even capture some stunning photos. The enclosure itself is a haven for the monkeys. It features bushes, climbing structures, rocks, and even a pool. The Berber monkeys here thrive in a social structure as complex as their natural habitat. Young monkeys, like Xenia, play a vital role. They can even help lower-ranking males climb the social ladder. These males “borrow” infants and groom them with higher-ranking males, forming new bonds. The Berberberg at Erfurt Zoopark currently houses fifteen Berber monkeys.
