Isn’t it fascinating how a place can transform over time? Right now, we are standing in front of Berakas Secondary School, a renowned institution in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Berakas Secondary School has been shaping young minds since its inception in 1971. It was originally known as Berakas English School. Berakas Secondary School transitioned to its current name in 1985. Today, Berakas Secondary School stands as a testament to Brunei’s commitment to education, offering a comprehensive curriculum leading up to GCE ‘O’ Level and IGCSE qualifications. Did you know that this school had a rather unusual episode in its history? In 1976, facing a space crunch due to a growing student population, the school, then Berakas English School, was partially shifted to a former Detention Camp! Imagine the stories those walls could tell. Over the years, Berakas Secondary School has nurtured many bright minds, some of whom have gone on to make significant contributions to Brunei. One such alumnus is Iswandy Ahmad, a respected member of the Legislative Council. His journey from these classrooms to the halls of parliament is truly inspiring. As we continue our tour, let this place remind us of the power of education and its impact on shaping future generations.
