“The Immaculate Conception.” These words echo through the grand halls of Myeongdong Cathedral. It is more than just a church. It’s a symbol of Catholicism in Korea. This cathedral stands tall in the heart of Seoul. It is a testament to faith and resilience.

Myeongdong Cathedral’s story began in 1784. The first faith community in Korea gathered here. This place was then known as Myeong-Nae-Bang. It was a humble start for what would become a significant landmark.

In 1894, Father Coste started planning the church. The construction was a massive undertaking. On May 29, 1898, the church was consecrated. It was dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The cathedral is the Cathedral Church for the Archdiocese of Seoul. It quickly became a symbol of the Catholic Church in Korea. Its presence in the city is both spiritual and historical. Myeongdong Cathedral has witnessed Korea’s journey through trials and triumphs.

In 1900, the relics of martyrs were moved here. These martyrs had died in the persecutions of 1839 and 1866. They were moved from Yong-San seminary. Their final resting place was the crypt in Myeongdong Cathedral.

In 1942, Father Rhee Ki-Jun became the first Korean parish priest. He was appointed pastor of Myeongdong. Bishop Rho Ki-Nam was raised to the episcopate. It was a moment of pride for the Korean Catholic community.

Liberation Day in 1945 brought a change. The cathedral’s name changed from Chong-Hyen to Myeongdong. This marked a new chapter in its history.

The 1970s and 1980s were turbulent times. Myeongdong Cathedral became a focal point. It was a hub for the democratic movement in Korea. The church played an important role. It advocated for the expansion of human rights.

Designated as historic site No. 258, Myeongdong Church holds significant historical value. Its architecture reflects its rich past. The cathedral was the first brick church in Korea. It was built in the Gothic style.

The floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. There is a center and two side aisles. The roof reaches a height of 23 meters. The bell tower soars to 45 meters. Its pure Gothic style stands unadorned.
