Perhaps this old mill could tell tales of tireless toil. The Benther Mühle stands proudly as a testament to a bygone era. This isn’t just a building. It is a symbol of ingenuity and enduring heritage.

Welcome to the Benther Mühle also known as the Siebentrappenmühle. It’s a captivating landmark located in the charming Sieben Trappen. Sieben Trappen is part of Benthe. Benthe is a district of Ronnenberg in the Hannover region of Lower Saxony.

Let’s step back in time to 1855. That’s when this remarkable windmill was built. It sits on land gently sloping south from the Benther Berg. It’s near the Nenndorfer Landstraße.

Locals affectionately called it the Göhnssche Mühle. This name came from the miller and his successors. The Göhns family even established the Zum Sieben Trappen inn nearby. The name Siebentrappenmühle comes from a legend associated with the Kreuzsteine. These stones have been collected here since 1858.

Imagine the rhythmic whoosh of the sails. Picture the grinding of grain within these walls. Until 1950, the Siebentrappenmühle served its purpose. It diligently produced flour for the community.

The Benther Mühle boasts a distinctive design. It is a four-story Dutch cap windmill. Its two-story base features sturdy Wealdensandstein blocks. The octagonal tower once sported a boat-shaped cap. It had sail wings and a tail for wind tracking. Later, it was updated with an onion dome. This included louvered wings and a wind rose.

Inside, one could find a millstone and two grist mills. A wooden king shaft transferred power. A lift and a hexagonal sifter were also part of the milling technology. To ensure operation during weak winds a auxiliary engine was installed in 1900.

In the early 1970s, the Siebentrappenmühle transitioned into a residential dwelling. The milling equipment was removed during the conversion. However, in 1995, new steel sail wings and a wind rose were added. The gallery was also renewed. Around 2010, the faded cladding was replaced with dark panels.

The Benther Mühle is now a protected monument. This is because of its historical significance. The mill contributes to the architectural character of the area.

As you stand here admire this historic structure. Envision the generations who depended on its service. The Benther Mühle stands as a reminder of the past. It shows us the enduring spirit of innovation.
