“Wealth, happiness, wisdom, and music.” Do these words resonate with you? They embody Benten, the goddess enshrined in Benten Hall. Benten Hall, or Benten-dō, is a Buddhist temple dedicated to Benten. Many such temples exist all over Japan. This Benten Hall stands as a testament to her enduring appeal.

Benten was originally the personification of a river. Thus, Benten Halls often stand near water. Look around you. Do you notice a river, pond, or spring nearby? The presence of water is no accident. It is a deliberate connection to the goddess herself.

Interestingly, Benten is often considered the same as the kami Ugajin. This reflects shinbutsu-shūgō. Shinbutsu-shūgō is the syncretism of Buddhism and local kami worship. Therefore, you might find Benten Halls at Shinto shrines too. The suffix “-dō” usually denotes a Buddhist hall. Shinto halls use “-den.” Yet, Benten’s unique position allows her halls to exist in both Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Kawahara Shrine in Nagoya is a prime example of this syncretic association.

Here at Manshuin Temple in Kyoto, Benten Hall sits on a small island. This island lies in the middle of a pond. Notice the very old red shrine next to it. That is Tenmangu. Seeing Buddhism and Shinto side by side like this is not unusual in Japan. Both buildings are accessed by passing under a stone torii. Then, you walk over a pretty arched stone bridge.

The BenTen Residences offer Japanese machiya accommodations. These are in the heart of Higashiyama, Kyoto. These Residences were featured as 1 of the Top 10 vacation homes in 2017 by Dwell. Yasaka Shrine is close by. Kiyomizu Temple is a short stroll away.

Imagine waking up in a traditional Japanese room. Heated flooring warms your feet. Tatami mats cover the floor. Futon bedding invites relaxation. A bath with a garden view awaits. It’s a blend of modern comfort and traditional aesthetics.

Shimaya Stays restored two machiya in Higashiyama. These became the BenTen Residences. The name pays homage to the neighborhood, Kami Benten-cho. Foreign owners collaborated with Japanese designers and craftsmen. Their goal was to create a home made in Kyoto for the world.

So, as you stand before Benten Hall, remember the goddess it honors. Recall her connection to water and her unique place in Japanese spirituality. Consider the blend of Buddhism and Shinto that she represents. Benten Hall is not just a building. It’s a symbol of cultural harmony and enduring faith.
