Waldeck’s political ascent began during the 1848-1849 revolutions. He was elected to the Prussian National Assembly. His influence was immense. He drafted a liberal constitution known as the Charte Waldeck. A less radical version was later adopted. He then became a member of the Prussian parliament.
His courageous stand for liberal ideals did not go unpunished. He was arrested for high treason in 1849. This represents about half of Berlin’s population at that time.
