Benedikt Schmittmann, a renowned social scientist born in Dusseldorf, dedicated his life to social justice and the betterment of his community. He served as a government official, advocating for workers’ rights and improving healthcare. Later, he became a professor at the University of Cologne, tirelessly promoting Catholic social teachings. Schmittmann’s principles put him in direct conflict with the rising Nazi regime. In 1933, he was arrested and dismissed from his position for his unwavering opposition. Despite the risks, he chose to remain in Germany. Sadly, his courage cost him his life. In 1939, Schmittmann was arrested again and sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp where he died from the brutal treatment he endured. The Benedikt Schmittmann Platz Column serves as a testament to his courage, his unwavering belief in social justice, and his deep love for his homeland.
