Hidden within Hanover, the Benecke-Burg whispers tales of a remarkable man. Wilhelm Christian Benecke, born in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1779, wasn’t just a banker and merchant. He was a passionate art collector and estate owner. Benecke’s legacy extends beyond Germany’s borders. In 1829, he acquired the Grödlitzberg fief in Silesia, complete with a baroque palace and medieval castle, earning him the noble title “von Gröditzberg”. His ventures also reached Norway. He partnered with Benjamin Wegner to purchase the Blaafarveværket cobalt mine. This industrial company had a long history, founded in 1773. One fascinating piece of Benecke’s story involves a prized possession. He owned a seascape by Willem van de Velde the Younger, acquired from the Edward Solly collection. Tragically, this artwork was “restored to death” in a renowned museum’s workshop. A 15-year court case ensued, ultimately concealing the disastrous restoration. Benecke’s eye for art extended to stained glass. He acquired Johann Martin Usteri’s collection of 156 windows, dating from the 15th to 18th centuries. Many of these windows now reside in the Landesmuseum Zurich. The Benecke-Burg stands as a quiet testament to this intriguing figure. It invites us to ponder the life of a man whose interests spanned continents and centuries. A man whose passion for art and industry left a lasting mark.
