Benaki’s Museum of Islamic Art in Athens opened in 2004. It houses a remarkable collection. Antonis Benakis a member of a prominent Alexandrian family began this collection in the early 20th century. He amassed thousands of objects while living in Egypt. Generous donations later expanded the collection significantly. Today the museum boasts nearly 10000 objects. These represent the artistry of the Middle East Iran Turkey North Africa and India.
