Did you know that the Beloved Baptist Church started in a humble home? It was on the 2900 block of Thomas Street in Philadelphia. Let’s delve into the story of this evolving church.

Originally named St. John Baptist Church, it grew under Reverend Matt Yancy’s leadership. The church then relocated to 2601 Lehigh Avenue. With this move came a new name. It became Beloved St. John Baptist Church.

November 1996 marked a significant change. Reverend Clement M. Lupton III was installed. His leadership brought rapid transformation. Within five years, the church shifted from Baptist to Evangelistic.

In 1997, the Beloved St. John Church officially incorporated. It gained tax-exempt status in Pennsylvania. This was under its new name Beloved St. John Evangelistic Church. The church established nearly forty ministries. It created its first non-profit. This was the Beloved St. John Community Development Corporation.

The church founded the Beloved St. John Evangelistic Bible Institute. They launched their first Radio Ministry. BSJEC’s Television Ministry started with Time of Decision. God continued to bless BSJEC in the years that followed.

December 5, 2004 was a day of celebration. It marked their first worship service at 4541 North Broad Street. Just six years later they celebrated paying off their mortgage. The Beloved Baptist Church held a Mortgage Burning Service.

New ministries emerged. These included the HIV/AIDS Care Ministry and the Single Mother’s Ministry. The Philadelphia Tribune recognized the Beloved St. John Church. It was named “Church of the Week” in 2002, 2004, and 2014.

Time of Decision expanded its reach. It could be seen locally on WTVE. It also aired nationally on The WORD Network. The Radio Ministry added more broadcasts.

In 2009, Pastor Lupton received an honor. The Philadelphia Council of Clergy presented him with the “Measure of a Man” award. The Beloved Baptist Church building underwent major renovations. A brand new elevator was installed in 2007. Two large screens and projectors were added.

The most used email format is JSmith@belovedstjohn.org. It’s used 100% of the time. Today, the Beloved Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It highlights community service. It also reflects continuous evolution. From its humble beginnings to its current ministries the church’s journey inspires us all.
