Didn’t Prince Giuseppe Emanuele Ventimiglia know he was starting something special back in 1752? Belmonte Mezzagno. It is a name whispered with pride by locals. A place with a past as rich as its olive oil.

Belmonte Mezzagno’s story began when Prince Ventimiglia obtained the “Licentia Populandi” from King Charles III. This allowed him to establish the town. The very first settlement was called “Bagghiu”. Imagine a large open-air court. Houses faced inward. A grand common entrance welcomed everyone. An arch marked the edge of the Spatola torrent. This design allowed easy access to water.

The first census in 1752 counted 64 houses and 185 people. The priest Don Stefano Grasso recorded this. Belmonte Mezzagno grew quickly. But peace wasn’t always guaranteed. In 1849, the Bourbon army set fire to much of the town. This was punishment for supporting the 1848 Sicilian revolution.

Even before its official founding, Belmonte Mezzagno had a history. Priest Don Nicolo Lo Valvo requested payment for pastoral services. This was for the period from September 1741 to December 1742. It’s unclear if the land was occupied seasonally or permanently then.

The first church was built in 1756. Soon, it became too small. So, the Chiesa Madre del SS. Crocifisso was constructed in 1776. It remains a central part of life in Belmonte Mezzagno today.

Belmonte Mezzagno is known for two special products. Its olive oil is prized. Its goat’s milk cheese is a local delicacy. These tastes reflect the land. They connect the town to its agricultural roots.

The village also has its dark side. Benedetto Spera was born here. He was a member of the Sicilian Mafia. He was convicted for the killings of anti-mafia judges Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone.

Belmonte Mezzagno sits 350 meters above sea level. It is nestled behind mountains. These mountains form the southern border of the Conca d’Oro, when looking from Palermo. The terrain is mostly mountainous. It has distinct geographical features. The landscape shows resistance to erosion.

Two streams once ran through Belmonte Mezzagno. These were the Anselmo and Spatola torrents. They met below Piazza Garibaldi.

Today, Belmonte Mezzagno is famous for its festivals. The Festa Santissimo Crocifisso celebrates the town’s patron saint every September 14th. There’s also the Sagra della Salsiccia, a food festival. It is held to enjoy local sausage.

Belmonte Mezzagno offers a glimpse into Sicilian life. Its history began in 1752. It continues to evolve. It’s a place where traditions are cherished.
