A century of stories echoes within these walls. Welcome to the Belmont-Watertown United Methodist Church. This impressive structure in Belmont stands as a testament to faith and community. It wasn’t always this way though.
In 2012 two congregations the Belmont United Methodist Church and St John’s United Methodist Church in Watertown merged. They formed the Belmont-Watertown United Methodist Church. This union created one community across two sites. Worship services are held in Belmont. Recovery and other services continue at the Watertown location.
The Belmont church building is a significant landmark. Its Gothic Revival style is striking. It took 16 years to build completing in 1922. This building however has faced challenges. Declining membership and high maintenance costs have presented difficulties. The church was even put up for sale for 6.5 million dollars. Ultimately the sale didn’t go through.
The church is more than a place of worship. It has a basement auditorium and a gym. It aims to be a community hub a space for everyone. The scent inside is described as evoking nostalgic memories for longtime members. It’s a sensory experience. A reminder of childhood memories and comforting familiarity.
The pandemic exacerbated existing issues. Attendance dropped. Online services helped maintain some connection. Yet the church struggles to regain pre-pandemic numbers. This reflects a broader trend of declining church attendance nationwide.
Despite these challenges the church perseveres. It continues to serve its community. The Belmont-Watertown United Methodist Church remains a beacon of faith and fellowship. Its future is uncertain but its spirit endures. Its story continues to unfold one service one community gathering at a time.
