“A playground built on the eve of war?” a child might ask, staring up at the swings of Belmont Playground. Yes, right here at Belmont Playground, the echoes of children’s laughter mingle with the ghosts of a city bracing for the unknown. Belmont Playground, tucked away in the Bronx, holds a unique piece of New York City history, intertwined with the tumultuous years of the New Deal and the looming shadow of World War II. In 1937, the initial Belmont Playground opened, a small beacon of hope during the Great Depression. Constructed with relief labor and funds, it offered a much-needed respite for the community, with play equipment and even a designated roller-skating area. Imagine the children, escaping their cramped apartments, finding joy in the simple pleasure of rolling across the pavement. Then, in 1941, expansion plans began. The city acquired additional land, envisioning a larger, grander Belmont Playground. The WPA, a New Deal agency, took on the task. Their ambitious plans included new tennis courts, a combined ice skating rink and softball diamond, handball courts, and even a shaded sandpit. It was a vision of a vibrant community space, a testament to the resilience of a city in uncertain times. But just three days after the press release announcing this ambitious project, the United States entered World War II. The world changed, and the fate of Belmont Playground became uncertain. The planned vocational high school next door was never built, its intended site now a parking lot. It’s unclear if the WPA’s full vision for Belmont Playground was ever realized during the New Deal era. However, the spirit of the project persevered. The playground continued to serve the community. Later, in 1954, the Parks Department “improved and developed” the land, ensuring that Belmont Playground continued to be a place of recreation and joy. So, as you stand here, in this bustling playground, remember its layered history. Remember the children who found solace here during the Depression, the workers who labored to expand it on the eve of war, and the community that continues to cherish this small but significant piece of New York City’s past.
