Overlooking Palermo, Bellolampo stands watch. This isn’t just a hill; it’s a silent storyteller. Bellolampo rises 430 meters, a prominent figure against the backdrop of the Conca d’Oro. Visible from almost every corner of Palermo, Bellolampo has witnessed the city’s evolution. The name itself, Bellolampo, hints at a past identity. It’s believed to be a corruption of “Belampo,” possibly derived from the Arabic word “balam,” meaning sterile. This might refer to the hill’s appearance in the Middle Ages. Ironically, Bellolampo once hosted fruitful orchards and vineyards, a stark contrast to its later role. Today, most locals associate Bellolampo with the landfill hidden on its inner slopes, a blemish on its otherwise beautiful face. Plans are underway to replace this landfill with a waste-to-energy plant. Bellolampo briefly held another, more glamorous title. In 2001, artist Maurizio Cattelan erected a giant “Hollywood” sign on its slopes. A playful nod to the hills of Los Angeles, this installation placed Bellolampo firmly in the spotlight, a temporary stage for art and irony. The road winding up Bellolampo offers an alternative route to the towns on the Carini plain, bypassing the bustling highway. Houses dot the slopes of Bellolampo. Early constructions date back to the Fascist era, followed by a building boom from the 1960s to the early 1990s. Among these are a small Fascist-era gatehouse, the Inzerillo estate built around a well of the same name, and the Carramusa family estate at Pizzo Capra. Bellolampo is more than a hill; it’s a layered narrative, a testament to Palermo’s changing times.
