Bellinzago Lombardo, a name whispered through centuries, invites us to explore its story. About 25 kilometers northeast of Milan, Bellinzago Lombardo stands as a testament to Lombardy’s rich past.

Bellinzago Lombardo’s history stretches back to ancient times. The area was known as “BILICIACUM” around 80 BC. Ligurian, Venetian, and Siculi populations inhabited these lands even earlier around 1000 BC.

In Roman times, Bellinzago Lombardo prospered despite being surrounded by swamps. However, detailed historical records only begin in the Carolingian era around the 9th century. These early records tell tales of pestilence and disease. These calamities decimated the population of Bellinzago Lombardo.

The 13th century saw Milanese noble families warring over the land. The Torrioni and Visconti families fought for dominance. After Filippo Maria Visconti’s death in 1447, Milan declared the short-lived Aurea Ambrosiana Republic.

Around 1460, the Sforza family gained control. They initiated the construction of the Naviglio della Martesana canal. Completed in 1497, it brought water to Milan. Bellinzago Lombardo became part of the Melzo feud under the Counts Trivulzio in the 1500s. By 1549, Spanish forces seized the territory. This era brought tragic plagues in 1576 and 1630.

Spanish occupation lasted until 1707. Then the Austrians took control. They initiated public works. One notable project was a bridge connecting Bellinzago Lombardo to the Milan-Bergamo postal road.

Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Austrians in 1796. This led to political changes. Despite this, Bellinzago Lombardo suffered from typhus and cholera epidemics. Local administration worked to improve sanitation, schools, and postal services. Schools for elementary and middle school students were built in 1959.

The 20th century witnessed an increase in construction. Residential complexes and small villas appeared. The nearby Gessate metro station contributed to this growth.

Bellinzago Lombardo boasts historical villas. Villa Maderna-Moioli and Villa Carcano reflect a noble past. Villa Maderna-Moioli, a 17th-century summer residence for a Milan governor has a U-shaped layout opening towards the Naviglio. Its northern facade retains original frescoes.

Along the Martesana canal lies the Conca di Villa Fornaci. This iron structure mimics a design by da Vinci. It overcomes a 1.83-meter difference in elevation across its 33-meter length. Electrically controlled iron gates regulate the canal. “Vinciane” metal doors moved by rope winches close the lock.

Numerous farmhouses dot the landscape. Today, these agricultural businesses maintain simple yet dignified architecture.

Bellinzago Lombardo’s coat of arms tells another story. It connects to the ancient name Birinzago. The design incorporates symbols from the Birinzago family. The red and gold colors plus the rampant gold lion come from their heraldry. The coat of arms also acknowledges Bergamo’s historical influence and imperial power over the town.

Bellinzago Lombardo offers more than just buildings and monuments. It is a place where time seems to slow. Here one can reflect on the layers of history that have shaped this Lombard town. From Roman roads to noble villas, Bellinzago Lombardo invites you to discover its fascinating past.
