The bell tolls. Not a church bell but a salvaged one. It sits proudly in front of the Belle Chasse Public Library. A silent sentinel guarding the history of Belle Chasse.

Belle Chasse a small town in Plaquemines Parish Louisiana. It’s more than just a census-designated place. It’s a place steeped in history. Its name itself is a mystery. Some say it means “beautiful hunting” a testament to the rich wildlife that once thrived here. Others believe it honors a Colonel Joseph D Bellechasse or perhaps a plantation owner.

The Belle Chasse plantation itself was once a prominent landmark. Confederate statesman Judah P Benjamin owned it. Sadly it fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1960. Only the bell remains a poignant reminder of a bygone era.

But Belle Chasse is not defined solely by its past. It’s a vibrant community. It hosts the Orange Fest the Crawfish Fest and Gamers Fest. The Plaquemines Parish Seafood Festival also takes place here. These festivals bring people together celebrating food music and community spirit.

The town’s modern history is intertwined with the military. The Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans is located in Belle Chasse. It’s a crucial base for the U S Navy Reserve. Various naval air units are housed there along with Air Force and Marine Corps Reserve units. Even U S Navy Reserve Airborne Early Warning Squadron 77 relocated here in 2009 from Atlanta Georgia. They deploy routinely to the Caribbean for counter-narcotic operations.

Belle Chasse’s story also includes tragedy. On February 14 1975 the body of an unidentified teenage boy was discovered near the town. He left behind a suicide note. Despite national coverage his identity remains a mystery.

Belle Chasse’s diverse past and present intertwine. It’s a testament to the resilience of a community that embraces its history while forging ahead. It’s a place of festivals of military service and unfortunately unsolved mysteries. It’s a place you should definitely explore and discover more about its intriguing tale. The bell is waiting.
