Aimee’s vision. That’s the spark that ignited Bell Foursquare Church. Bell Foursquare Church, right here in Los Angeles, traces its roots back to the extraordinary Aimee Semple McPherson. She founded the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel in 1923 after opening the Angelus Temple. The term “Foursquare Gospel” emerged during a revival in Oakland, California, in 1922. Aimee connected Ezekiel’s vision of a four-faced being to the four aspects of Jesus’ ministry: Savior, Baptizer with the Holy Spirit, Burden-Bearer, and Coming King. Bell Foursquare Church, like other Foursquare churches, embraces these core beliefs. Aimee’s impact extended beyond spiritual matters. During the Great Depression, her commissary at Angelus Temple fed millions. During World War II, she sold more war bonds than Hollywood stars. Her legacy of compassion and service continues to inspire Bell Foursquare Church today. The Foursquare Church expanded rapidly, both in the United States and internationally. The first Foursquare missionaries, Vincente and Teodora DeFante, were sent to the Philippines in 1927. This global outreach reflects Aimee’s own missionary spirit. Bell Foursquare Church stands as a testament to her enduring vision. The symbols of the cross, cup, dove, and crown, often associated with the Foursquare Gospel, represent the four facets of Jesus. They remind us of the comprehensive message Aimee championed, a message that resonates within the walls of Bell Foursquare Church.
