“Big fella fighting ground”. That’s what the Aboriginal name Belivah means. It’s a powerful image isn’t it? A place of strength and perhaps conflict. But today Belivah is a quiet suburb in Logan City Queensland. It’s a place where history whispers through the trees and the land itself remembers.

Belivah wasn’t always a suburb. Its story began long before houses and streets. Long before the name Belivah itself. In 1872 a small Congregational Church opened its doors on Mr McLean’s land. Just imagine a simple wooden structure 16 by 24 feet. A place of worship in the heart of the bush. It was a tiny speck of civilization in a vast landscape.

This humble church wasn’t just a religious centre. It served as the first Belivah school. Imagine the children learning their ABCs within those hardwood walls. Around 1891 however the residents wanted a new school. They wanted it closer to where more children lived. The Queensland Government initially refused. Undeterred the community built a new school themselves. The government eventually relented contributing £37 to finish it. It was renamed Wolffdene Provisional School later becoming Wolffdene State School. It ultimately closed in 1942. It’s quite the story of community spirit isn’t it?

The official naming of Belivah came much later. In 1985 the Governor in Council declared it a suburb. Residential development began in 1991 and the boundaries were further defined in 2003. Belivah grew from a small collection of houses to the suburb we see today. A suburb with a fascinating history hidden within its quiet streets.

Today Belivah is a blend of past and present. A place where the echoes of a church and a school still resonate. It’s a place where the spirit of community endures. A place with a story richer than many realize. Belivah. Remember the name. It whispers of a remarkable past.
