Right in front of us stands Belgard Castle, a blend of ancient fort and elegant Georgian home, its history a captivating story that whispers through time. Belgard’s roots go back 700 years. The original tower, a relic of medieval times, stands staunchly, its walls thick and strong – a silent witness to turbulent history. In the 18th century, the castle received a luxurious makeover with the addition of the three-storey Georgian house, which became a home for the Talbot family.
This powerful family, the Talbots of Belgard, were key figures in the history of Dublin. The castle was their stronghold, a place of both grandeur and defense. They battled against nearby Irish groups who ventured from the mountains. You can still sense the legacy of the Talbots in the elegant plasterwork of the dining hall. While the Talbots were busy defending Belgard, the English were engaged in their own Civil War. The Talbots sided with the Confederation of Kilkenny, placing them at odds with the English monarchy. Following the defeat of the monarchy and the execution of Charles I, the Talbots faced exile and served in Flanders, where they fought bravely in the wars.
Upon their return to Ireland, the Talbots were restored their land and continued to occupy Belgard. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Belgard shifted hands several times, finally landing in the hands of the Maude family in 1910. Today, Belgard Castle stands as a testament to its noble lineage, a place where the walls of a medieval tower whisper secrets of a fascinating and turbulent past.
