Why is Beixiaoying called ‘North Small Camp’? The name holds a clue to its origins dating back to the Han Dynasty. Beixiaoying is more than just a name. It is a place with a story that stretches back centuries.

Let’s journey back to the Han Dynasty. Commander Zhang Kan of Yuyang established two military stations in this region. Beixiaoying evolved from the northern settlement. This northern settlement became known as ‘North Small Camp’. This is the origin of Beixiaoying’s name.

Beixiaoying is located in the northeast of Shunyi District in Beijing. It sits adjacent to Yangsong Town and Mulin Town to the east. Nancai Town lies to the south. Shuangfeng Subdistrict and Niulanshan Town are to the west. Mulin Town also borders it to the north. Beixiaoying covers an area of 55.5 square kilometers.

Beixiaoying has undergone many administrative changes throughout history. In the early Republic of China, it was the eighth district of Shunyi County. By 1949, it became part of the third district of Shunyi County. In 1956, the district was withdrawn and merged into Beixiaoying Township. Then in 1958, it became part of Mulin People’s Commune. Beixiaoying People’s Commune was established in 1961. In 1978, the southwest part of Mafang Commune was integrated into it. Beixiaoying was transformed into a township in 1983. Finally, in 1989, it was established as a town.

As of 2020, Beixiaoying had a population of 42805. By 2018, the registered residence was 37469. In 2021, Beixiaoying Town comprised 19 subdivisions. These include 2 communities and 17 villages. Yongli and Shuise Shiguang Huayuan are the two communities.

Beixiaoying is a town with a rich agricultural history. In 2011, the total agricultural output value reached 330 million yuan. The primary crops are wheat and corn. Animal husbandry is also significant. This includes pigs, cattle, sheep, and poultry. In 2011, the total industrial output value of Beixiaoying reached 4.45 billion yuan. Cultural and creative industries are rapidly developing.

Beixiaoying is crossed by several rivers. The Xiaodong River runs through the north. The Jiangan River flows in the east. The Chaobai River is to the west. These waterways contribute to a rich water network.

Beixiaoying has a blend of history, agriculture, and industry. From its origins as a military settlement to its present-day status, Beixiaoying continues to evolve. The name ‘North Small Camp’ reminds us of its historical roots. It is a living testament to China’s long and fascinating past.
