Let’s step back to understand Beiwu’s past. It existed as the 3rd District of Shunyi County in the early 20th century. Over the years, its status evolved. It transitioned from township to management district and finally became a town within Shunyi District.
In 2020, Beiwu was home to 13980 residents. Covering 32.19 square kilometers it had a population density of 430 people per square kilometer. Beiwu shares borders with several other towns. These include Yang Town, Dasungezhuang Town, Gaolou, and Yanjiao Towns. Lisui Town also borders Beiwu.
Beiwu faced significant changes due to Beijing’s urban expansion. In the late 2000s, the Beijing city government initiated the “Unification of urban and rural.” This project aimed to remake the rural periphery. Beiwu was among the villages slated for demolition and rebuilding.
The “Beiwu model” emerged during this transformation. It allowed villagers to participate in the urbanization process. They could control village collective land and share in the gains of urbanization. This model differed from others. Dawangjing model focused on increased compensation for relocated villagers.
The transformation of Beiwu involved demolishing the old village. A new green space was created. The villagers were relocated to newly built housing complexes. This project aimed to improve living conditions and integrate Beiwu into the city.
However, the rapid changes also brought challenges. Villagers worried about the loss of their traditional livelihoods. They had concerns about shrinking living spaces and unclear property rights. The Beiwu model sought to address these issues. It provided land for commercial development. This would generate income and employment for the villagers.
