A tiny synagogue in Acre’s bustling market whispers secrets. This is Beit Ramchal a place steeped in history and controversy. Beit Ramchal honors Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto. Known by the acronym RaMHaL this remarkable scholar was a kabbalist philosopher writer and poet. He was born in Venice in 1707. From a young age he showed a keen interest in mysticism religious lore art and science. RaMHaL quickly became a brilliant scholar. His claims of receiving divine lessons from an angel however made him a controversial figure. The Italian rabbis viewed his teachings as dangerous heresy. He was forced to leave Italy.

RaMHaL found refuge in Amsterdam from 1735 to 1743. He continued his prolific writing. He produced plays poetry and religious commentaries. He also wrote extensively on Jewish law and ethics. His most famous works are Messilat Yesharim The Path of the Just and Derekh Hashem The Way of God. RaMHaL wrote 71 books in total. In 1743 he journeyed to the Holy Land. He settled in Acre. Sadly he and his family succumbed to the plague three years later.

Beit Ramchal the synagogue where he worshipped is a simple structure. It has a stone ceiling and arched interiors. A unique feature is a deep pit in the floor. Tradition says RaMHaL would descend into this pit to read the Torah. The verse Out of the depths have I called Thee O Lord inspired this practice. Another unusual aspect is the absence of a women’s section. Women would stand in the street listening to services through a window. A precious piece of parchment with three columns of text from a Torah scroll written by RaMHaL hangs on the wall.
