Picture the Beit Ijza Mosque a simple yet serene structure nestled on a hilltop. Its presence speaks volumes of faith and resilience. Beit Ijza Mosque stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the community. For centuries this mosque has served as a spiritual haven a place of prayer and community gathering.

Beit Ijza a village with a rich history is located just six miles north of Jerusalem. Its name meaning “the house of Izza” hints at a personal history. Records dating back to 1538/9 mention Beit Ijza as a mazra’a a farm. Later in 1596 tax registers identify it within the Al-Quds district. The village’s population was predominantly Muslim. They cultivated wheat barley summer crops and tended olive trees vineyards and fruit trees. They also raised goats and kept beehives.

Under Ottoman rule Beit Ijza continued to thrive. Richard Pococke in 1738 described it as Beteser situated on a hill overlooking a valley. In 1838 it was noted as a Muslim village in the Beni Malik area west of Jerusalem. The PEF’s Survey of Western Palestine in 1883 described Beit Ijza as a moderately sized village on a hill possessing a spring.

The British Mandate era brought changes. The 1922 census recorded 59 Muslim inhabitants. This number slightly decreased to 54 in the 1931 census. By 1945 the population had grown to 70 Muslims. A land and population survey revealed 2550 dunams of land were under cultivation. Much of this land was used for cereals with a small portion designated for plantations and irrigable land.

The 1948 Arab-Israeli War shifted power. Beit Ijza came under Jordanian rule. The 1961 Jordanian census recorded 129 inhabitants. After the Six-Day War in 1967 Beit Ijza fell under Israeli occupation. The Oslo II Accord of 1995 designated a small portion as Area B while the rest became Area C under full Israeli control. Land was confiscated for settlements such as Giv’at Ze’ev and Giv’on Ha’hadasha.

The separation wall further impacted Beit Ijza. It cut off 980 dunums of land a significant portion of the village’s area. Palestinian landowners need Israeli permission to access their property. This permission is often difficult to obtain especially for younger generations leaving the land uncultivated. The Beit Ijza Mosque itself though has remained a beacon. It stands as a silent observer a symbol of enduring faith in the face of adversity. The mosque continues to serve its community a steadfast reminder of spiritual strength and collective identity.
