Beijing

Amidst the bustling energy of modern China, Beijing stands as a timeless testament to centuries of history. Beijing has been the capital of China, on and off, for over 700 years. Few cities can boast such a lengthy reign as the heart of an empire. Peking man, an early hominid, roamed the area hundreds of thousands of years ago, leaving behind traces of a distant past. Much later, the Zhou dynasty established Ji, the first capital on this site, around 1045 BC. Over the millennia, Beijing has been known by many names – Ji, Yanjing, Zhongdu, Dadu, Beiping, and finally, Beijing, the “Northern Capital”. Each name reflects a different chapter in the city’s rich history, a tapestry woven with threads of imperial grandeur, Mongol conquest, and revolutionary change. Under Kublai Khan, Beijing, then known as Dadu, became the center of all of China for the first time. Marco Polo, visiting in the 1280s, marveled at the city’s splendor, the organized post roads, and the Khan’s lavish feasts. The Ming dynasty, after briefly moving the capital to Nanjing, returned it to Beijing in 1421. The city walls, moats, palaces, and temples we see today largely date from this period, constructed with a meticulousness and scale that aimed to impress. When the Manchu Qing dynasty took power in 1644, they retained Beijing as their capital. The city continued to grow, with magnificent additions like the Old Summer Palace and the Summer Palace. Sadly, the Old Summer Palace was tragically destroyed in 1860 during the Second Opium War. The Forbidden City, with its intricate architecture and vast courtyards, stands as a symbol of imperial power and artistry. The Temple of Heaven, where emperors performed rituals to ensure a good harvest, offers a glimpse into the spiritual beliefs of past rulers. The city’s cultural treasures, from the intricate art of Peking opera to the savory delight of Peking duck, continue to captivate and inspire. Beijing is a city where the past and present intertwine, a place where ancient traditions meet modern aspirations.
