Amidst the bustling city of Beijing lies a sanctuary, the Beijing Zoo. Established in 1906 during the late Qing Dynasty, Beijing Zoo holds the distinction of being China’s oldest zoo. It’s also the oldest public park in northern China. Originally an imperial manor during the Ming Dynasty, the land transitioned to become part of General Fuk’anggan’s estate during the Qing Dynasty. In 1906, the area transformed into an experimental farm with a small menagerie. This marked the beginning of Beijing Zoo’s journey, a blend of nature and history. The zoo spans 89 hectares, a vast expanse filled with lush gardens, serene lakes, and historic buildings. The Empress Dowager Cixi and the Guangxu Emperor, figures of immense historical importance, graced the zoo with their presence, each visiting twice. The zoo houses an impressive 14,500 animals, representing an astounding 950 species. Among the residents are the iconic giant pandas, a beloved symbol of China. You can also find the vibrant red pandas, mischievous golden snub-nosed monkeys, and the elusive South China tiger. The zoo’s commitment to conservation is evident in its breeding programs. In 2013 alone, 1,104 offspring of 92 species were successfully bred. This includes the critically endangered Northern white-cheeked gibbon and the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey. Beyond its animal inhabitants, the Beijing Zoo offers a glimpse into China’s architectural heritage. The Changguanlou, a Baroque-style palace designed by a French architect for Empress Dowager Cixi in 1908, stands as a testament to the fusion of architectural styles. It’s one of the best-preserved Western-style palaces in China. Within the zoo’s grounds lies another marvel, the Beijing Aquarium. Opened in 1999, it’s the largest inland aquarium in China. This vast space of 120,000 square meters houses a dazzling array of marine life. As you wander through the Beijing Zoo, remember you’re walking through a place where history and nature intertwine. It’s a place where emperors once strolled, and where rare animals now find a haven. Beijing Zoo isn’t just a zoo; it’s a living museum. It offers a unique perspective on China’s rich past and its dedication to preserving its natural treasures.
