Once known as Asbury Church, the Chongwenmen Church stands before us. It whispers tales of faith and resilience. This church is one of the largest Protestant churches in Beijing. It has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century.
The American Methodist Church established the original church in 1870. Back then, it was called Asbury Church. It was designed to hold several hundred worshippers. By 1882, they expanded it.
Tragedy struck during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. The church fell victim to the rage of China’s farmers. It was burned down completely. However, the story doesn’t end there.
In 1902, the Qing Dynasty Government stepped in. They provided funds to rebuild the Asbury Church. By the spring of 1904, the new construction was complete. This is the main structure we see today.
For many years, the Chongwenmen Church has been a vital part of Beijing’s religious landscape. As the Methodist mission grew, it expanded. A hospital, schools and a theological seminary surrounded the church. Even part of Peking University was nearby.
However, in 1958, the church buildings were repurposed. They were given to No. 125 Middle School. This successor to the mission schools used it as an assembly hall. During the Cultural Revolution, the interior suffered damage.
But the Chongwenmen Church rose again. In 1982, the Beijing Christian Council received the church. Renovation work began and the church reopened at Christmas 1982. Regular services have been held ever since.
Today, the Chongwenmen Church brings together more than 2,000 worshippers for each service. In 2001, government grants allowed for a comprehensive refurbishment. Over the years, many American presidents and foreign dignitaries have visited the church.
The architectural style shows grace and ingenuity. It blends many cultures. The main level is divided into two sections. The main hall seats 400 people. The side chapel seats 300. A movable partition separates them. They can be used separately or as one large room. The basement has a seating capacity of 800-1000. Services are filmed and viewed in the basement via closed-circuit television.
The Chongwenmen Church is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith and community. It has overcome challenges and continues to thrive. Its history is a testament to the enduring spirit of Christianity in Beijing. It has become a historical relic in the municipal district since 1990. Also, it is a popular location for couples to shoot their wedding photos.
