Deep in the Siebentischwald forest lies a place called Bei den sieben Tischen. It whispers tales of Augsburg’s past. Bei den sieben Tischen translates to “At the Seven Tables”. It started as a simple rest stop. It evolved into a beloved gathering spot. It is steeped in history and shadowed by tragedy. The story of Bei den sieben Tischen begins in 1602. Augsburg acquired the 280-hectare Bischofsau forest. This secured the city’s water supply and provided timber. A clearing near today’s intersection of Siebentischstrasse and Ilsungstrasse became the home of the city’s Holzwart (wood warden). This individual was granted permission to host guests at seven tables. This seemingly small act marked the birth of a popular destination. The seven tables offered respite and refreshment. Centuries passed. The humble tables became synonymous with the area itself. In 1908, the city commissioned a new inn. It included expansive outdoor seating with, of course, tables and benches, as well as playgrounds. Bei den sieben Tischen flourished. It became a cherished spot for locals and visitors. Sadly, World War II brought devastation. The inn was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1944. Its remains were later removed, and the area was replanted. Traces of the foundation can still be found hidden beneath the trees. Some old chestnut trees stand as silent witnesses to the vibrant beer garden that once thrived there. The memory of Bei den sieben Tischen lived on. In 2005, the Augsburg Forestry Administration placed seven new tables and benches. They were crafted by apprentices from Berufsschule IV (vocational school). A drinking water fountain was also installed. Sadly, these too were destroyed a decade later. But the story doesn’t end there. New larch wood tables and benches, durable and weather-resistant, have been crafted. Once again, Bei den sieben Tischen welcomes visitors. It offers a space for rest and reflection amidst the tranquil beauty of the Siebentischwald.
