Begegnungskirche

Built between 1962 and 1966, the Begegnungskirche stands as a testament to modern church architecture. Originally known as the Luther-Kirche, the Begegnungskirche’s story is one of transformation and community. Designed by Peter Poelzig, this steel-reinforced concrete structure showcases a unique blend of architectural styles. Located at the intersection of Gotthardstraße and Winterthurstraße in Berlin’s Reinickendorf district, the Begegnungskirche has served as a spiritual home for various congregations over the years. The Luther-Kirchengemeinde, established in 1954, initially occupied the building. However, since the 1990s, the Begegnungskirche has embraced a more diverse range of Christian communities. In 2005, the Volksmission entschiedener Christen, a Pentecostal church, became the primary occupant. The Begegnungskirche complex itself is a sight to behold. A spacious ensemble consisting of the church, a campanile, and a parish house, it centers around a small square. The church’s main structure houses the nave, while the lower levels accommodate community rooms and a hall. The nave’s design is particularly striking. Divided into seven sections, it features a flat-roofed entrance area, followed by six sections covered with sloping roofs. Each section has a trapezoidal layout, with concrete walls and large glass windows between them. The altar area, bathed in natural light from high windows, creates a serene atmosphere. Above the entrance, an emporium adds to the church’s grandeur. The original organ, built by Johannes Rohlf, has since been relocated to St. Nikolaus in Berlin-Wittenau. The separate bell tower, constructed with staggered concrete slabs, houses three bronze bells cast in 1966. Each bell bears the inscription “CHRISTUS FINIS OMNIUM ET CENTRUM,” meaning “Christ the End and Center of All.” Today, the Begegnungskirche is more than just a place of worship. It serves as a hub for various community activities. From language classes and parent-child groups to a neighborhood meeting place and a senior living project, the Begegnungskirche plays a vital role in the local community. The church also hosts a chapter of the Royal Rangers, a Christian scouting group for children. The Begegnungskirche continues to welcome people from all walks of life, fostering a spirit of togetherness and spiritual growth.
