Sculpted from a single block of Muschelkalk limestone, the Begegnung Sculpture in Berlin’s Fennpfuhlpark speaks volumes without uttering a word. The Begegnung, meaning “encounter” or “meeting,” depicts two figures, a man and a woman, locked in a silent exchange. The woman sits, draped in a simple cloth, her head tilted back, her gaze fixed expectantly on the man before her. He stands, arms close to his body, his face angled downwards towards her. As you circle the Begegnung Sculpture, the story unfolds, transitioning from conversation to a sense of union. The sculpture is more than just a static piece of art. It invites interaction, encouraging viewers to walk around it, experiencing the narrative from different perspectives. The Begegnung Sculpture was part of the original design of Fennpfuhlpark during its redevelopment in the 1950s. The park, with its serene atmosphere, provides a fitting backdrop for this poignant depiction of human connection. The artist, Hildegard Leest, also known as Hilde Leest, has left her mark on Berlin with another notable work, “Brüder” or “Wiedervereinigung” (“Brothers” or “Reunion”), located at Liesenstraße/corner of Chausseestraße. The Begegnung Sculpture sits on a square concrete base, the rough texture of the concrete contrasting with the smooth, almost flowing lines of the sculpted figures. Look closely at the side of the stone block where the woman sits. You’ll find the artist’s signature, “LeesT,” subtly etched into the stone. This quiet detail adds another layer to the story, a personal touch from the artist herself.
