Imagine Beethoven himself is here with us. This is the Beethoven-Denkmal. It stands proudly on Münsterplatz in Bonn. This bronze statue commemorates Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth in this very city.

The Beethoven-Denkmal was unveiled on August 12 1845. This was to honor the 75th anniversary of his birth. But its story started long before that day.

Heinrich Carl Breidenstein, a music professor, first suggested the idea in 1828. He envisioned a memorial to Beethoven in his hometown. Initially, erecting statues to cultural figures was not common. It took time for similar monuments to appear for other great minds.

The Bonn Association for the Beethoven Monument launched a campaign in 1835. They sought support from across Europe. King Ludwig I of Bavaria was an early enthusiast. However, support was slow to materialize elsewhere.

Franz Liszt stepped in to champion the project in 1839. He donated a significant sum himself. He also organized concerts to raise funds. Liszt insisted that Lorenzo Bartolini should be the sculptor. However, the contract went to Ernst Julius Hähnel. Jakob Daniel Burgschmiet cast the statue in Nuremberg.

Liszt even composed a special piece for the unveiling. It was the Festival Cantata for the Inauguration of the Beethoven Monument in Bonn. Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn also contributed to fundraising efforts.

Originally scheduled for 1843, the unveiling was postponed to 1845. August Wilhelm Schlegel, head of the organizing committee, passed away that year. Heinrich Breidenstein took his place.

A three-day Beethoven Festival was planned around the unveiling. A suitable venue was needed for the expected 3000 attendees. Liszt offered to cover the costs of constructing the Beethoven Hall. Construction was completed in less than two weeks.

The Beethovenfest commenced on August 10 1845. Louis Spohr conducted performances of Missa solemnis and the Ninth Symphony.

On the morning of August 12, the Mass in C major was performed in the Cathedral. The unveiling ceremony followed. Numerous dignitaries attended. These included King Frederick William IV of Prussia, Queen Victoria, and Prince Albert. Composers like Hector Berlioz and Giacomo Meyerbeer were also present.

A parchment signed by the dignitaries was sealed inside the Beethoven-Denkmal.

In the afternoon, Liszt performed the Emperor Concerto. He also conducted the Fifth Symphony. Spohr led other pieces including the Coriolan Overture. A fireworks display concluded the day.

The following day featured a four-hour concert. It included Liszt’s Festival Cantata and Beethoven’s Egmont overture. A banquet followed. Lola Montez caused a scandal. She disrupted the event.

Opinions on the Beethoven-Denkmal itself varied. Some considered it a good likeness. Others were less impressed.

The Beethoven-Denkmal underwent restoration in 2022.

Today, the Beethoven-Denkmal remains a focal point in Bonn. It serves as a reminder of Beethoven’s genius and his connection to this city. The statue is a symbol of Bonn’s cultural identity. It attracts visitors from around the world. Take a moment to appreciate this tribute to a musical titan. The Beethoven-Denkmal stands as a testament to his enduring legacy.
