Bees Landing Recreation Center wasn’t built overnight. The city of Charleston had a plan. Two million dollars were budgeted to acquire the land. But the Grand Oaks Plantation developer stepped in. They donated the property. A generous gift that made the park a reality.
A public meeting followed. Ideas flowed. Residents shared their wishes for their new park. The result? A master plan unveiled in September 2005. A gymnasium a skate park a dog park a playground. Picnic areas athletic fields nature trails basketball courts. Tennis courts baseball and softball fields. Even a concession stand.
Bees Landing opened in 2010. A true community gathering place. The tennis courts a special tribute. Named after former Mayor Arthur B Shirmer. A Charleston mayor and avid tennis player. He left a lasting legacy. More than just leadership his passion is woven into the fabric of the park.
