Robert Poole, writing in 1753, certainly thought so. He described gentlemen meeting in the cave on Saturday nights, enjoying feasts despite the inconvenient location and lackluster view. He seemed puzzled by the choice, but the name stuck. Beefsteak Cave. Colonel Thomas James, stationed here around the same time, also noted the cave’s existence, placing it near the Nuns’ Well on Windmill Hill. Beefsteak Cave served a vital purpose during the Great Siege of Gibraltar. While the Governor prepared Poca Roca Cave as his potential refuge (though never used), Beefsteak Cave offered shelter to ordinary Gibraltarians seeking refuge from the relentless bombardment. The cave’s strategic location and protective embrace proved crucial for survival. Years later, during World War II, Beefsteak Cave, along with Coptic Cave, became part of a clever ruse. Operation Monkey, as it was known, aimed to create decoy caves. These were designed to mislead potential invaders searching for British spies. The actual plan to leave spies behind was Operation Tracer. The existence of Operation Tracer remained a rumor for decades until 1997, when the Gibraltar Caving Group made a startling discovery, unearthing evidence of this secret operation. Today, Beefsteak Cave whispers stories of feasts, refuge, and wartime deception. Its seemingly simple name belies a rich and layered history, etched into the very rock of Gibraltar.
