Bedford

In 1729, fifty families carved a town from the wilderness, a town they christened Bedford. Bedford, Massachusetts. It lies nestled about fifteen miles northwest of Boston. Now, Bedford is a vibrant community. But its roots are deep in the soil of Massachusetts history. Bedford played a key role in the birth of our nation. On April 19, 1775, the alarm rang out through Bedford. British soldiers marched towards Concord. Bedford’s Minutemen grabbed their muskets and the oldest complete flag known in the United States, the Bedford Flag. Its motto? “Conquer or Die”. They marched towards destiny. Captain Jonathan Willson rallied his men with a promise of a “hot dinner” for the British after their “cold breakfast.” This spirit of defiance fueled the fight for liberty. The Bedford Flag flew at the Old North Bridge in Concord. The “shot heard round the world” echoed through history. The fight for freedom began. Bedford’s history stretches back even further, to the early 17th century, when Governor John Winthrop and Deputy Governor Thomas Dudley divided their vast landholdings using two large boulders as markers. These “Two Brothers Rocks,” symbolize their cooperation and the spirit of early American democracy. Today, you can still visit these historic rocks. They sit peacefully within the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge, once a vital source of hay for the settlers, now provides sanctuary to hundreds of bird species and other wildlife. Another treasure of Bedford’s past is the Job Lane House. Built in the early 18th century by Job Lane, grandson of one of Bedford’s original settlers. This beautifully preserved saltbox house stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and resilience of early Americans. Job Lane’s son, also named Job, was a Minuteman wounded at the Battle of Concord. His blood, spilled on the ground he called home, nourished the seeds of a new nation.
