Around the year 700, the first settlers arrived in Bechstedt-Wagd. Their humble beginnings laid the foundation for the village we see today. Bechstedt-Wagd first appeared in official records towards the end of the 12th century. Initially, the Counts of Henneberg held sway over this small community. But in 1355, everything changed. The Counts sold Bechstedt-Wagd to the city of Erfurt for 169 marks of silver. This transaction marked the start of a 500-year period where Bechstedt-Wagd served as one of Erfurt’s vital villages. This meant Bechstedt-Wagd contributed to the city’s provisions and sustenance. Bechstedt-Wagd wasn’t just a typical village. It played a key role as a “Küchendorf,” or kitchen village. This meant it held a special position within the Archbishop of Mainz’s table estate. These villages, possibly dating back to Archbishop Bonifatius himself, had the crucial task of feeding the Mainz officials. These officials resided in Erfurt at the Mainzer Hof. Some Küchendörfer had the privilege of paying their dues in money instead of food. This provided a degree of financial security. Bechstedt-Wagd’s ties to Mainz continued until 1802. Then, along with the city of Erfurt, it became part of Prussia. Shortly after, Bechstedt-Wagd was incorporated into the newly formed Erfurt district. The 20th century brought significant administrative changes. In 1974, Bechstedt-Wagd became part of Egstedt. Then, during the Thuringian district reform of 1994, Egstedt was absorbed into Erfurt. However, Bechstedt-Wagd went its own way. It became part of the Ilm district and joined the community of Kirchheim. Kirchheim was a member of the Riechheimer Berg administrative community for many years. More recently, in 2019, Kirchheim and Bechstedt-Wagd became part of the Amt Wachsenburg municipality. This marked another chapter in the long and winding history of Bechstedt-Wagd. Today, Bechstedt-Wagd is still influenced by its agricultural roots. But many of its residents now work in nearby Erfurt. The heart of Bechstedt-Wagd retains the charm of a traditional Haufendorf. This means the village’s core consists of tightly clustered farmsteads. These farmsteads feature residential buildings, stables, barns, and gardens. The spacious gardens create a gradual transition to the surrounding countryside. Several houses and sidewalks in Bechstedt-Wagd are protected historical landmarks. The construction of a bypass has greatly enhanced the quality of life in Bechstedt-Wagd. This has made it a more desirable place to live and enjoy leisure time. Bechstedt-Wagd’s St. Trinitatis Church stands as a testament to the village’s enduring spirit. It underwent substantial baroque-style renovations in 1724. Recent years have seen ongoing restoration efforts. With the support of the Förderverein St. Trinitatis Bechstedt-Wagd e. V., the tower roof, tower shaft, and nave’s exterior have been renovated. Now, the much-needed interior renovation is underway. Bechstedt-Wagd is more than just a village. It’s a living tapestry woven with threads of history, resilience, and community.
