Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in the 17th century? Standing here, in front of Bechs Mølle, you can practically feel the weight of time on your shoulders. It is the oldest surviving windmill in Denmark, built in 1629, and the craftsmanship of those times reflects its enduring presence in this landscape. Bechs Mølle, also known as Svaneke Stubmølle, is a testament to a time when wind power was the backbone of everyday life. This mill, despite its age, has witnessed centuries of change. It has seen the rise and fall of empires, the evolution of technology, and the shifting sands of time. Once a bustling hub of the community, it was used to grind grain into flour and was a vital part of the local economy. Imagine the scene: Møllebakken, the hill where the windmill stands, bustling with activity. People from the small town of Svaneke would have brought their grains to be ground.

The mill has a rich history, but you might not know this: it was originally built on the cliff edge. In 1866, a road was built, and the mill had to be moved to make way for it. It is not just a museum piece, it has been a working mill for centuries. In 1928, it was finally decommissioned and listed, making it a precious relic of its past. And what’s even more interesting is that the mill’s name comes from Hans Bentzen Bech, who took over the mill in 1814. He passed the mill on to his son, Peter Emilius Hansen Bech, who ran it until his death in 1934. You can almost hear the wind whistling through the sails, grinding the grains, and the smell of fresh-baked bread wafting from the bakery opposite the mill which Peder Hansen Bech, the son of Hans Bentzen Bech, built between 1848 and 1860. Bechs Mølle might be silent now, but it speaks volumes. Its story is woven into the fabric of Bornholm, offering a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the enduring power of tradition. It’s one of many stories on this island, and its beauty and historical significance are a testament to the ingenuity of the people who built it and kept it going for centuries. It stands here as a silent sentinel, a symbol of resilience and tradition that offers a glimpse into a bygone era.
