Beaumont began as a simple farm in the 18th century. It was a part of the Coolock Civil Parish. Then something amazing happened. Arthur Guinness himself the legendary brewer took a lease on 51 acres. He built his family home there in 1764. He called it Beaumont House. This beautiful house inspired the name of the entire area. This magnificent building still stands today though it’s now a convalescent home. You can even see the original 1764 lease in the National Library of Ireland. Think of it the paperwork that started it all. Guinness’s rent was a surprisingly modest 93 pounds a year.
The Guinness family lived in Beaumont House for nearly a century. They lived there until 1855. Then the Sisters of Mercy bought Beaumont House in 1900. They turned it into a convalescent home for patients recovering from their time at the Mater Hospital. It’s fascinating to think of how this family home evolved into a place of healing.
