In the heart of the Lodi countryside, nestled within the commune of Montanaso Lombardo, lies the Beata Vergine di Arcagna. This seemingly simple sanctuary holds a captivating tale. It all began in 1649, a year of miracles at the Beata Vergine di Arcagna. A farmer, working his field near Pantanasco, struck something hard with his plough. It was a piece of a wall, bearing a sacred image of the Virgin Mary. The sky, which had been relentlessly pouring rain for two weeks, suddenly cleared. The mute parish priest of Beata Vergine di Arcagna regained his voice. The farmer, crippled by arthritis, found himself miraculously healed. News of the miracles spread like wildfire. The villagers sought a fitting home for the image, eventually placing it in the parish church of Arcagna, which then became the Santuario della Madonna di Arcagna. The image became known as the Madonna del Gabòn. This name harkens back to the location of its discovery near a giant elm tree, still standing today. A replica of the Madonna hangs from its branches, a constant reminder of the miracles. Interestingly, official church records from the time fail to mention these miraculous events. Perhaps the church officials exercised caution, waiting for 1849 when the then-parish priest, Don Angelo Beza, finally established November 21st as the feast of the Traslazione. This day commemorates the discovery and transfer of the 15th-century image to the Beata Vergine di Arcagna. The sanctuary’s history is intertwined with a local castle, built in 1317. This castle, complete with a Gothic hall, observation tower, and frescoes, later became a convent for Salesian nuns until 1660. Around 1800, it transformed into a private residence for the Bagatti Valsecchi counts. Over the centuries, it has served as a farmhouse, an inn, and even a restaurant. As of 2020, after extensive renovations true to its original style, it stands once again as a private home. The Beata Vergine di Arcagna continues to be a place of pilgrimage. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the fascinating stories that shape our world.
