It was a place of peace and trade. Arapaho Cherokee Comanche Kiowa and Apache tribes gathered along Bear Creek. This was unusual for the time. They traded with French explorers. The land has seen many changes. Before the park existed it was a poor farm. It also included a Pest House and a Pauper’s Cemetery. The land’s history stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological sites show evidence of Paleo-Indian people. They lived in the area as early as 4-5000 BCE. The Utes also had a long history here. They used the area’s Iron Springs. These springs were also important to other Indigenous Nations.
Alexander Rooney a white settler arrived in the 1860s. He established Rooney Ranch near Bear Creek. His family had respectful relationships with the Utes. They lived together for many years. The Rooney family ranched farmed and mined in the area. They even had a coal mine. It later caught fire tragically killing miners.
Today Bear Creek Park offers many activities. There are trails for hiking horseback riding and cycling. The park also has a nature center. It features interpretive programs and special events. The renovated playground provides fun for children of all ages. A new picnic area horseshoe pits and an amphitheater add to the park’s amenities.
