Seven couples. A simple Bible study. This seemingly small beginning in 1977 blossomed into what we know today as Bear Creek Baptist Church. Bear Creek Baptist Church stands as a testament to the power of faith and vision. Located at the crossroads of West Houston, Katy, and Cypress, Bear Creek Baptist Church serves a diverse and ever-growing community. This area, fueled by the expansion of I-10 and the Grand Parkway, is often called the “energy corridor.” Bear Creek Baptist Church sits nestled between two of Texas’s largest school districts: Cy-Fair ISD and Katy ISD. In 1978, that small Bible study group took a leap of faith. They established a mission and began worshipping in a KinderCare facility on Clay Road. This was directly across from an empty field that held the promise of their future. Just three years later, in 1981, they purchased that very field. They constructed their first church building, officially becoming Bear Creek Baptist Church with over 175 members. Over the next two decades, Bear Creek Baptist Church continued to grow, build, and make disciples. In 2001, Pastor David Welch became the lead pastor. At that time, Bear Creek had 2,141 members and a regular Sunday attendance of around 897. They had 57,000 square feet of ministry space and had baptized 1,216 individuals in their first 20 years. Growth brought new challenges. By the early 2000s, Bear Creek Baptist Church was outgrowing its space. Despite the difficulty of finding suitable land in West Houston, they were blessed with 35 acres at Fry Road and West Little York. In March 2006, Bear Creek Baptist Church moved into its new facility. This building was 50% larger than the previous campus. Within 18 months, attendance doubled and 1,000 new professions of faith were recorded. Continued growth necessitated yet another expansion. In 2014, they broke ground on a 27,500-square-foot addition to accommodate their burgeoning preschool, children’s, and adult ministries. This new space opened in January 2015, further enhancing Bear Creek Baptist Church’s capacity to serve its community. The church continues to evolve. Just recently, a $1 million expansion project began to accommodate the growing Spanish ministry, led by Pastor Ivan Garcia. This ministry, currently held in a converted auditorium, has outgrown its 350-person capacity. The expansion will increase the space by 3,000 square feet, allowing for 650-700 attendees. The project is expected to be completed by 2025. From a small Bible study to a thriving community, Bear Creek Baptist Church continues to live out its vision: to be a gospel-centered, disciple-making community reaching out to all people.
