Remember Beach Channel High School? Its story is one of beginnings and endings. This is a story not just of bricks and mortar but of dreams nurtured and paths diverged.

Beach Channel High School opened its doors in 1973. The high school quickly became a part of the Rockaway Park community. It stood overlooking Jamaica Bay. The location offered stunning views. The school even had its own private dock. Imagine students setting sail to study marine life.

The vision for Beach Channel was ambitious. There was talk of a weather station. There was talk of a scuba diving tank. A special Marine Biology Regents exam was unique to the school. The goal was to integrate marine studies into the curriculum. Biology classes collected plankton right from the bay. Math students plotted water temperature and salinity.

Over time, Beach Channel High School grew. By 2006, it had over 2150 students. The school offered unique programs like College Now. This allowed students to earn college credit. Students attended programs at Rikers Island and Kingsborough Community College.

Beach Channel’s music program was exceptional. The Marching Band performed at Lincoln Center. They performed at Queens College. They even marched in St. Patrick’s Day parades. The Jazz Ensemble played at local venues. They performed for figures like Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton.

The arts also flourished. The Art Department attracted talented teachers. Bruce Degen taught there. He later created The Magic School Bus. Renee Darvin directed art for the NYC Board of Education.

Beach Channel even had a crew team. They rowed in the Henley Regatta in England in 1983.

However, the school faced challenges. By 2009, Beach Channel was labeled a low-performing school. There was a proposal to close it. Sadly, Beach Channel High School graduated its last class in 2014.

Despite its closure, Beach Channel’s legacy lives on. The building now houses several smaller schools. These include Channel View School for Research. It also includes Rockaway Park High School for Environmental Sustainability. Rockaway Collegiate High School is also there.

Channel View School for Research partners with Jet Blue Airlines. They provide internships and free flights for college visits. Rockaway Park High School teaches carpentry and culinary skills. Rockaway Collegiate High School offers extra support to help students succeed.

Many remember Beach Channel fondly. Alumni recall dedicated teachers. They recall a close-knit community. A farewell gala in 2014 brought many together. They shared memories and celebrated the school’s history.

Bernard Gassaway, a former principal, improved the school. He even wrote a book about his experiences.

Though Beach Channel High School is gone its impact remains. It is a reminder of the power of education. It is a reminder of the importance of community. It is a reminder of the dreams that can be nurtured within school walls. The building still stands. It is now home to new schools. It carries forward the torch of learning.
