“Imagine letters sorted here. This Baytown Post Office Plaque marks a spot of community history. Let’s delve into the story of the old Goose Creek Post Office.

This building, now marked by the Baytown Post Office Plaque, wasn’t always a museum. It started as the Goose Creek Post Office. It was built in 1936-37. For almost 50 years, it served as the main postal facility.

Louis A. Simon designed this early international style building. The Baytown Post Office included an interior fresco mural. This mural was part of the Federal Arts Program. The Works Progress Administration commissioned it.

Think of the hustle and bustle. Envision postal workers sorting mail. Imagine residents collecting letters from loved ones. The Baytown Post Office was a hub of communication.

In 1985, the post office moved. The building then became the Baytown Historical Museum. This transition ensured its preservation. In 1988, it became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The Baytown Post Office Plaque commemorates this designation. Its marker number is 10611.

Today, the Baytown Post Office Plaque stands at 220 West Defee. This plaque reminds us of the building’s past. It connects us to a time when this place was the heart of local mail service. So next time you pass by, remember the letters. Remember the history held within these walls.”
