Remember Bayswater a forgotten resort? Bayswater Point State Park stands as a reminder of that posh community. It was a forerunner to the Hamptons. It represents an era when Rockaway was more exclusive.

Bayswater Point State Park offers a tranquil escape. It occupies 17 acres at the tip of a peninsula. It juts into Jamaica Bay’s Mott Basin. The park’s diverse terrain includes beachfront, wetlands, and woodlands.

Once, the land housed the mansion and estate of banker Louis A. Heinsheimer. His expansive mansion called Breezy Point was built in 1907. In 1925, the mansion became a home for disabled children. Later, it served children with intellectual disabilities.

The Trust for Public Land purchased a 12-acre parcel in 1986. By then, fire had damaged the mansion. It was demolished in 1987. Only the conservatory remained. New York State designated it a state park in 1991.

New York City Audubon gained administrative duties. Between 1994 and 1996, they conducted a research and restoration project. They sought to engage the public with the land’s conservation.

Bayswater Point State Park faced a brief closure in May 2010. This was due to budget cuts. Fortunately, an agreement was reached to reopen it. In 2015, an $80000 project aimed to stabilize Sunset Lodge.

The park preserves habitat for migratory birds in Jamaica Bay. It also protects butterflies. Its beach is used by horseshoe crabs during mating season. Bayswater Point State Park is largely undeveloped. It offers space for hiking birdwatching and fishing. With its close proximity to JFK Airport, the park is a prime plane spotting location.

Bayswater Point State Park matters because parts of Rockaway’s earlier history have been lost. It is a uniquely residential enclave within Far Rockaway.

The Bayswater resort centered on the Bayswater House hotel. William Trist Bailey a British businessman created it. Today, Trist Place and Bailey Court exist within Bayswater.
